There's any number of older no-name banjos, though of course they too lack rods in the neck. I like the Goodtime pretty well, and the superbright tone could be adjusted by using a fiber-skin or Renaissance head, or by lessening head tension.

But I'm not one to talk - I ended up with a Mike Ramsey Fairbanks Electric copy - and that's more than a $300 banjo.
