Here in Michigan we have fox squirrels, grays (black being a color variation of the same species) and red squirrels. About five years ago we had hybrids start showing up in my neighborhood with many varieties of size and color. The hybrids, of course, are very vigorous and we are about waist deep in squirrels today much to my bird dogs' dismay.
