Another of Theresa's one-person-band efforts was recently named NPR's "Song of the Day":

"Birds Fly Away"

Video of "Birds Fly Away"

She's not the first person to "invent" this approach to solo performance, but she's pretty good at it, getting her share of attention, and going on the road alone while continuing her already-established career as a bandleader.

My feeling is that she's doing an excellent job and is about 99% effective. My only minor quibble: near the end of "Birds," as she raises her hands above her head and starts to really wail above the looping track of her background vocals, I first noticed that something seemed to be missing, some slight and subtle but important feeling of human interaction. I had not felt that the entire performance was at all "sterile," but at this potentially climactic moment, I got the sense that something was missing ~ the presence of any other human expression, either vocal or instrumental.
