I get the impression that it might be trying to avoid two things that are seen here - drive-by trolls and discussion of "what is folk".

However, since so many English "Folk songs" (you know what I mean) survive mainly in the form re-learned from their last survival in the wild in Appalachia I am inclined to think that the UK/US linkage here is useful.
