As with other archival issues, the danger is oxygen and other chemical attackers. Consider placing the reeled tapes in airtight baggies and then in boxes of some sort. Do not put them back into cardboard, as the sulfur in the cardboard can cause all sorts of interesting degradations, just as it does with paper.
