Different genres each tend to have a different empahsis and it seems to me that this is mainly what determines whether you like them.

Do you listen to the tune or the words?
Do you prefer melody or chords?
Do you have a preference for certain time signatures?
Do you prefer lots of bass notes or shrill notes etc... ?
Are you looking for strict time keeping or the opposite?
Are you looking for improvisation?
