Subject: RE: Old Banjo Any Idea's
Looks to me to be possibly a Geo Matthews from the shape of the peg-head, or it could be a Hewitt (very similar). It has been quite a good instrument in its day (hence the spicing under the fingerboard) and has lost the resonator (or back-plate) somewhere along the line, there are marks of its fixing points on the perch pole (or dowel rod).   Looks like the hoop has been re-finished at some time as it doesn't quite fit with the colour of the neck.   It could use some tlc and probably a new skin - if its a natural skin it should be changed every six months anyway! Looks like all the hardware is in place, even if it lacking strings and bridge.   Certainly worth a "do up" and use.   Better quality than you would find in the average shop without paying a small fortune for! Any you are NEVER too old to learn !!
