Understood - been there and done that! I personally prefer the feeling of a totally "live" performance in a studio, but it's rare to be able to that in most studio conditions. Space, as you say, is one consideration, as is mic "bleed".

Years ago, when I was playing with a mainstream jazz band, we actually took over the large function room of a pub for the afternoon, and recorded an album live. We had to do two or three takes on one or two numbers but, all in all, it had a good feel to it, and had a spontaneity that more technically composed recordings I participated in with other bands later lacked.
