More people in the Southwest have air conditioning now, but as recently as 25 years ago when I lived in AZ for a couple of years a majority of them had swamp coolers on their roofs.

I have a hose end adaptor that is plastic and looks like a 3' rearing snake. It has tiny little nozzles in the top and puts out a fine mist. I suppose those have sold out if you have them there--they can make a shady porch feel downright comfortable and don't use much water at all, if you're also short of H20.
