Thanks, guys. As a former park ranger, I'm inclined to follow what many ranger friends in remote places do after their pets pass. They leave them in a clearing where the vultures will take care of the dead. We have woods and a clearing where I leave squirrels that have been killed in the street, but I don't think the kids would go for that. Or the compost (dark organic gardener humor there). It'll have to be the yard.

Last year I planted a small tree out front next to a spot where I think I can dig a deep enough hole. The dogs won't go there and I'll put some cinder blocks over the spot for a little while to discourage other digging animals.
