The song is referenced on page 245 of the paperback edition of Jack Finney's time travel novel "Time and Again" as "The Spanish Cavalier". The setting was 1882; so, according to the posting by Victoria Guest, it would have been a fairly new song then.

I learned it in my elementary school music class (4th grade, I think)in the mid-fifties. When I read Finney's book last month, I stopped cold at the reference, closed the book, and immediately sang two verses and the chorus --- after an over fifty-year gap between music class and now!
