AS Manitas pointed out, this is a controversy about nothing. Apostrophes have been generally removed from placenames and road names ages ago(if they were ever there in the first place). Look on any OS map. Jacksons Lane, Malkins Bank, Charles Bottom, Hunters Way. A sample from places I know well, I am sure we can all produce hundreds. Obviously, in formal grammatical terms you would expect apostrophes, but custom dictates you don't use them in place names. That's the way it is. I am happy with that. I am not happy with "new potato's". or "its going to rain" It's all a qustion of usage and prejudice.
