BUGS sounds like it is based on the Prometheus Curse (maybe Prometheus Bug), a trashy book about beatles with firefly tails that actually do light fires. They multiply like cockroaches and set fire to every major city in the world.
Of course, some pathetic wretch keeps a few as pets - that's when they start flying and spelling in formation. LOL
