The head of the Great Sphinx seems too small for its body. (How come nobody but me seems to notice this? I have seen several TV documentaries about the Great Sphinx, where they explore various theories about its origin, and they never mention the problem of proportion.) This makes me think the head must have been re-carved after the body was made. What did it originally look like?

After writing the above paragraph, I did a bit more research, and found that I'm not the only one to think of this. See http://www.sphinxmystery.info/, and especially notice the profile shown below the words "Sanctuary of Anubis."

Eanjay: "How do they know that?" is a good question to ask in many circumstances. I can't read a newspaper or listen to a news report without having that same thought.
