To run a gas turbine/Jet engine (Same thing, apart from a ramjet) you mix coal dust in water to suspend it. The coal dust used has a similar consistency to talcum powder. Then it is injected into the combustion chamber, the same as ordinary Jet-A1, AvTur, AvCat, AvTag, or fuel of your choice!

Its just a 4 stroke engine with less rociprocating parts!

The reason you can't use coal dust in a steam loco, is that it will explode, causing a really bad day on the footplate!
