Thread Name: Chords Req: The Dutchman (Michael Smith)
Subject: RE: Chords Req: The Dutchman (Michael Smith)
Got two versions, one is Steve Goodman´s, the other - I´m not sure. Maybe Liam Clancy ot Tommy Makem, maybe my adaptation.

The Dutchman    Michael Peter Smith

(C) The Dutchman's not the kind of man
Who keeps his thumb jammed in the dam
That (Dm)holds his dreams in,
(G) But that's a secret that only (C)Margaret knows.
When Amsterdam is golden in the summer,
Margaret brings him breakfast,
(Dm) She believes him.
(G) He thinks the tulips bloom be(C)neath the snow.
He's mad as (F)he could be, but (G)Margaret only (C)sees that (C/B)sometimes,(Am)
Sometimes she (F)sees her unborn (G)children in his (C)eyes.

Let us (F)go to the banks of the (Em)ocean
Where the (F)walls rise a(G)bove the Zuider (C)Zee.
Long a(Dm)go, I (G)used to be a (C)young (C/B)man,(Am)
And dear (F)Margaret re(G)members that for (C)me.

The Dutchman still wears wooden shoes,
His cap and coat are patched with the love
That (Dm)Margaret sewed there.
(G) Sometimes he thinks he's still in (C)Rotterdam.
And he watches the tug-boats down canals,
Calls out to them when he thinks
He (Dm)knows the captain,
(G) Till Margaret comes to take him (C)home again
Through unfor(F)giving streets that (G)trip him, though she (C)holds (C/B)his (Am)arm,
Some(F)times he thinks he's a(G)lone, and he calls her (C)name.

Let us (F)go to the banks of the (Em)ocean
Where the (F)walls rise a(G)bove the Zuider (C)Zee.
Long a(Dm)go, I (G)used to be a (C)young (C/B)man,(Am)
And dear (F)Margaret re(G)members that for (C)me.

The winters whirl the windmills 'round,
She winds his muffler tighter,
And (Dm)they sit in the kitchen.
(G) Some tea with whiskey keeps a(C)way the dew.
And he sees her for a moment, calls her name,
She makes the bed up, singing
(Dm)Some old love song,
(G) A song Margaret learned when it was (C)very new.
He hums a (Dm)line or two, (G) they sing to(C)gether (C/B)in the (Am)dark.
The Dutchman (F)falls asleep, and (G)Margaret blows the (C)candle out.

Let us (F)go to the banks of the (Em)ocean
Where the (F)walls rise a(G)bove the Zuider (C)Zee.
Long a(Dm)go, I (G)used to be a (C)young (C/B)man,(Am)
And dear (F)Margaret re(G)members that for (C)me.
