There's a rather wonderful little book called "The Music of Coal"--photoessays about southern Appalachian mining and two fine CDs, featuring both field recordings and good contemporary performances.
$35 and well worth it. Available from CAMSCO, of course (who also carries a bunch of very good recordings of mining songs CDs--check out camscomusic.com and, in the search section, look for a keyword "mining"
