Thread Name: Devendra Banhart
Subject: RE: Devendra Banhart
I hate his new stuff. Sounds like Donovan's attempts to be funky in the 1960s (except, er, not as funky). Or stuff Beck might have tossed off in some studio downtime.
I can listen to Banhart's early stuff, when it was just him and a guitar. You can hear the Tyrannosaurus Rex influence, sure, but also Mississippi John Hurt and other country blues artists. I like the fact that it's so lo-fi and hissy too (which couldn't be further than the over-produced awfulness of his recent stuff).
I never liked his voice though, which is why I'd never choose to listen to him. And him and Anthony (& the Johnsons) have had a terrible influence on the singing of an awful lot of impressionable would-be bohemians with acoustic guitars.
