Idea derives from who knows when - I got it from Ratlebone and Ploughjack - actual quote "Penny for the Ploughboys, Only once a year And God Speed the Plough"
The museum in Whittlesey has mugs with all or part of this on, dating from C19. It's so long since I looked at them that I can't remember precisely.
Hedingham Fair did a card image of Old Glory Molly Dancers in 1997 with a surrounding banner with the Penny for the Ploughboys inscription on it. Central part of this used by Elaine Bradtke for front of Truculent Rustics.
Song took several years to develop - chorus came first then the verses a couple of years later.
I'm going to record the song soon as part of a compilation of bits and bobs developed over the years - songs, tunes and resettings of songs handed down through the tradition. Hedingham Fair will publish and market
