Same goes in the UK - there are several plants that cannot be planted due to their invasive growth and ability to adapt. One such plant is the Japanese knotweed. Introduced by the Victorians as mid height (3-4ft) ground cover in large parks and gardens, for its red stalks, green heart shaped leaves and white blossoms that provide seeds for tits and finches in autumn, it quickly acclimatised and spread like wildfire. It's against by-laws in some areas to plant this - particularly if you live in a National Park or area of outstanding natural beauty.
