This phrase, "Close enough for folk music" is a common one. I've heard it many times from many different performers, and I always though it was a left handed way of saying, we are not hard asses about how a song should be sung or played. Leonard Bernstein once said that classical music is mis named, it should be called "precise" music. It is played as it was written. Folk music is flexible. I've used that term myself in this context.
