olddude, a few years ago colleague told me that her adult son was on an international flight and had very little seat room due to the large bloke sitting next to him...he quietly called the flight attendant over and pointed out that he had paid for a seat and didn't have one because he was so squashed....they moved him to another seat. He didn't rant or make a fuss, so perhaps that's why he was moved.

I suppose that could only happen if there were spare seats, and there's no guarantee on that.

Be thankful your seatmate wasn't eating curry!
