There seems to be a vast underground of ukelele players, who come out in odd places. Years ago we had Andy M. Stewart & Gerry O'Beirne in concert, and Gerry explained the lure of the uke to us, guilty pleasure that people known as players of other, more um.. reputable? stringed instruments like guitar or mandolin, tend to have. Players of scorned instruments sometimes band together and flaunt it (Like the band Those Darn Accordians. Gerry swore there was (at that time) a punk band in New York called Uke Till You Puke. After all the self deprecating intro, he launched into uke accompanyment on a song "The Echo Mocks the Corncrake" where it had a lovely, almost percussive effect that showed that a wonderful player can make the most of anything, no matter how simple.
