Thread Name: Fear of Flying
Subject: RE: Fear of Flying
I suppose that I should point out that I once did a "test flight" in a twin-engine,propellor-driven Naval communication (navigation trainer) aircraft. It was fine until the pilot (Lt.Commander Slatter) decided to do "single engine stalls".Having shut down the starboard Alvis "Leonides" radial piston engine, he then got the airspeed down to around 74 knots before we started falling out of the sky.He repeated the exercise with the port engine shut down also, although he did at least have the decency to re-start the starboard engine first ( he was good like that ).After a bone crunching series of "Hard Landings " to test the main oleo- legs of the undercarriage ( gear), I exited the aircraft, kissed the ground ,and vowed never to fly again,if I could possibly avoid it !
