And what would we have done with an epidemic in our midst? I still think it is a miracle the Irish were even allowed in the country, prejudice or not, and the only reason I am alive. Prejudice is really entertwined with fear of epidemics and violence. It is hard to separate. It is easy to condemn, until one is faced with Ebola perhaps carried by someone on the bus, TB passed on by people at the health clinic...MRSA all over the place. It is something not talked of when people talk of prejudice, but it is practically an innate, and very realistic, fear that we have.

But there were stories of courage by a blacksmith and some nuns in that situation. mg
