Ted Stevens is a Republican. Based on evidence presented at the time, the Bush justice department would have been crucified if they HAD NOT prosecuted Stevens.

Being an occasional conspiracy-suspector (especially in regard to the Bush administration), I tend to think that they had to prosecute him, as you say, but then they fouled the process up on purpose, so that eventually he'd have to be let off.
