I don't wholly agree with SS's thesis (and I suspect he wishes the scenario he describes not to be the case, if only to avoid people singing Hotel California), but I understand exactly where he's coming from. I don't believe he's trying to redefine folk, but merely to understand and describe what he sees when he goes into, erm, designated folk contexts.
