My Dad was a beautiful guitar player. I loved to listen to him play. It never occurred to me that one day he wouldn't be around anymore. I wish sometimes that I had thought to record him, I would love to hear him play again. There are grandchildren, and great-grandchildren that have never heard him play. It would have been so nice to be able to let them hear him play and not just hear us say how great he was. Hoping that things go better for your friend, but I think it is a great idea. That's just my personal opinion though.
