Thread Name: Origins: Carol of the Bells (Shchedrik)
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Carol of the Bells (Shchedrik)
Right, nothing about Christmas Bells in "Shchedryk."

The original folk song was a winter 'wishing-you-well' song, sung in Ukranian villages. The folk song, and others, were sung on Jan. 13, New Year's Eve in the Julian calender. The Ukrainian National Chorus sang the Leontovich composition at home and abroad, singing it at Carnegie Hall in 1921.

The date for the English version seems to be 1936; Wilhousky copyrighted the lyrics and song. The post by Clueless Don indicated that Leontovich was included in the credits so I would guess some royalties were payable, or should have been payable, but, I dunno.

Good thing Joe copied the lyrics at the link, which seems to have gone away.
