The Irish Washerwoman is definitely worth a mention. And for some reason long since lost in the recesses of my deep heart's core, I bracket it with a reel called Saddle the Donkey. (Was I condemned to learn them both on a school recorder?) But as thread creep has already allowed a song or two to sneak in, I really must put in a word for The Barley Mow, which was almost unavoidable in the English (midlands and northern) folk clubs of my youth. It is a staggeringly tedious dirge, usually projected with a frightening surfeit of kinetic energy and general good humour.
