Play him some Mississppi Sheiks. There's also fiddle on a lot of Bo Carter songs.

But buy him a guitar as well. He likes McFly and Blind Lemon Jefferson. They play guitars, not violins. The important thing is to keep him interested in music. He can always come back to fiddle. You may find that playing the guitar boosts his overall love of music to the extent that he starts to enjoy the violin a bit more.

I had violin lessons forced on me as a kid. I had a love/hate relationship with it. I basically resented the lessons, but quite enjoyed the occasional piece.

Anyways, basically when I hit the age of 12, it was guitar all the way. I carried on going to violin lessons, playing in the school orchestra, but I never practiced. What was the point - it was time I could be playing rock stuff on the guitar!

I eventually returned to the violin again in my mid-20s. I was glad I had those reserves of playing ability.
