Thread Name: 2 CD tribute to Utah Phillips!
Subject: RE: 2 CD tribute to Utah Phillips!
As C.Ham said, Utah didn't like singing it for a few reasons. One was that the person it was written about was still alive, and while others might sing it, it felt wrong for him to. The other it that it is a bitter and angry song and he simply didn't feel that way anymore.

He told me that he wrote "Rock Salt and Nails" and "I Think of You" on the same day, or in the same two days - I can't remember which came first. Those two songs were the two very different sides of his feelings after receiving a Dear John letter when he was in Korea. I was surprised, because I'd never thought of "I Think of You" that way.

He didn't say, but I imagine the third song that probably came out of that event was "The Soldier's Return," which Rosalie sings on the double CD.
