For me, the pipes summon up a call to arms. It seems to me that a group of men marching into battle could easily be influenced to lay down their lives, with the bagpipes calling up what is best and most heroic in their nature. Maybe that is the secret of the tragic aura surrounding the lone piper. Without the stir of drums and battle, the sound of the single bagpipes player seems to mourn what was lost.
