Compressing air takes energy. IF you use renewable sources (solar. wind power, etc.) to power the compressors, there's a gain and benefit to the system. It moves the problem one step down the food chain. But there's no inherent advantage I can see to the method as such otherwise, any more than wind-up clockwork VWs would have.
