The key there is variation, C n' C - origin & composition isn't dealt with in the 1954, whose Faithful would have us believe there will be no more Folk Song because, as Pip says: the conditions under which the process described by Karpeles could work don't obtain any longer. Not sure how this effects the various individuals who continue to create very convincing idiomatic folk songs, nor yet those members of the folk community who take them to their hearts, but I personally can find just as much meaning in The Old Songs, When All Men Sing and Bring Us Barrel etc. as I do in the bona fide traditional numbers, so someone must be doing something right, and thank God they are.
