I seem to remember from a comparison when the railways were putting an end to steam that a diesel powered locomotive is about 37% efficient maximum and that petrol came at about 25%. I think electric was 40% but I'm not sure on that one. Coal fired steam locos could be as low as 7%. Cars are less efficient because of the scale effect.
