Thread Name: Folk music in South East London
Subject: RE: Folk music in South East London
Our hearty thanks to those of you who have responded to my search for singarounds, sessions, Northumbrian Pipes sessions in this part of the world .

The clear answer is "not a lot". I am truely amazed that London is such a 'Folk music desert'.

As we travel around the uk we enjoy a whole movement of free singarounds and sessions, good clubs and great festivals where folk enthusiasts gather together to sing, play and enjoy one another's fellowship.

Clearly the pressure cooker environment of the capital is not conducive to the gentle sleepy friendly world of the new grass roots revival of folk music.

We did turn up to attend the Court Sessions at the Globe. Sadly we got back in the car fast, put off as we were by the air of tough town centre boozer with bouncers on the door in a generally seedy run down intimidating area.

We were also amazed to see that it would have cost £8 for the two of us just for a singers night.

We are happy to pay at our local clubs when significant acts are on but we don't need to pay to hear ourselves and friends sing thats why the singarounds and sessions have developed around the country.

We haven't visited CS House yet but their website does not hold much promise, we quite like scottish, Russian cajun and north american native music but struggled to find the throbbing heart of English Folk Music. Howeever we look forward to an evening at Sharps Club - even though it will cost us £6 for a singaround!!!

I suppose the thing to celebrate is that folk music is firmly rooted in the country. London's loss is our gain.

Cheers
