Central to the story is the concise description of a CIA life or death decision; "The CIA decided they wanted Roalnd dead, So that son-of-a bitch Van Owen blew off Roland's head." Not sure I didn't get the link from Mudcat. Victor Jara was a far more important figure in Chile and the western hemisphere generally than Zevon, although Warren did write some terribly disturbing and powerful songs. Victor Jara personified the threat to US economic terrorism that pervaded South America for two centuries, and sang about it bravely and widely enough to get himself killed.
