Thread Name: BS: You don't mean that... (word game)
Subject: BS: You don't mean that...
This is a game that was played by graduate students at Caltech around 1960. It strikes me that it is well adapted to the Internet.

In conversation, someone happens to emphasize a certain word, and there is a lull afterward. Another participant starts the game by saying "You don't mean that; you mean..." and gives a definition, characterization, or synonym of another word that sounds like the given one, one way or another. Someone else (the first person or a third one) guesses (but does not mention) that word, thinks of one that sounds like that one, and continues "You don't mean that; you mean...". The game goes on until someone is stumped, and only then are the words in the chain revealed. It often turns out that the chain has gone several links beyond the first wrong guess.

For instance:

I will try to be concise.
You don't mean that; you mean repentant.
You don't mean that; you mean shorten.
You don't mean that; you mean a silly machine.
You don't mean that; you mean....
