It appears that pawn shops in my locale are required to submit lists of all items received in pawn to the local police.

An acquaintance reports that "her pawnbroker" claims to have been sternly lectured about using appropriately descriptive entries when he listed her wooden crucifix (with holy water contained therein) as "hippy on a stick."

It appears they sent someone in to check it out.
