'Why do we need to wait 'til somwbody dies to pay a tribute to them?'

Well, we don't. Many tributes, in song and otherwise, were rightfully paid to Ronnie Drew before his death. Tributes do however tend to be paid to older musicians with a long standing musical career behind them, Ronnie Drew hadn't reached that point during the seventies/early eighties.
