I am almost sure that dolphins have been reported indulging in recreational sex.

Recreational sex has been well-documented among many species. Bonobo chimps are the poster children for recreational sex in the animal world. And then there is the gay sex in the animal world.

I heard an author interviewed a couple of years ago about a book, but I don't remember what it was called. A quick search came up with an article by a different author that covers much of the same territory. The effeminate sheep and other problems with Darwinian sexual selection.

Ideas evolve; the world views that we hold today are different than in Victorian times or Revolutionary War times or during the Crusades, and these are different from world views in Asia and Africa for comparable periods. Ideas about religion, literature, politics, social issues are a social/cultural accretion. But to think that people in earlier eras didn't figure out many of the same things we know about sex today is naive. The big ideas are in the cerebrum, layered in through culture and formal education. The limbic system (mammalian brain) or the brain stem is where the sex comes from.

This discussion of sex has been channeled through the modern cerebrum, and apparently a lot of folks are relatively unaware of what the mammalian brain can get up to.
