My guess would be that the red nose is a reference to the Scottish propensity for serious drinking.

But I expect I'll get howled down by disgruntled Scots for saying such a thing..........

(There is a Red Nose Day in the UK, by the by, which is an every-two-years media charity appeal for Comic Relief, which raises money for projects in the UK & Africa.)
