He is also "Uncle Duke" in Doonesbury, and is rumored to be the author of the sections of the comic that feature him. Plot lines he is likely to have authored include the recent one about Pat Buchanan's neoNazis taking over Duke's campaign, and earlier ones about Duke living in Colorado and shooting at neighbor John Denver; the sacrifice of virgins to a volcano in Samoa, and Duke and Duke Jr.'s various criminal adventures at Duke's Home for wayward boys.
His "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" is an underground classic of sorts (as is his book about the Hells Angels). He walks a fine line between drug-crazed razor- edge journalism and drug-crazed dementia/incoherency.
