Morticia - NO, they weren't cleaner back then. My X used to watch those old movies and I was stunned at some of them. What movie ws it that "Singing In the Rain" first appeared in? Anyway, one the the characters in that movie was named "Anytime Annie" - for the reason that first comes to mind. They just didn't cuss back then, but the content was still there.
