Johnny's enjoyment of folk songs, sea-songs and shanties was always evident in his twinkling eyes and his smiling voice - yes, you could always hear his smile even if you couldn't see him.

He will also surely be remembered by everyone who met him for his loving kindness; I remember his ready, warm words of encouragement when running singarounds, especially for newbies or nervous singers. He seemed to put himself in other people's shoes so easily, and offer just the right few words they needed. Whether he was on stage addressing many or chatting one-to-one ... while cooking pancakes for everyone at Whittlebury, for example, Johnny's love of songs and of people shone through.
