My preference would be to see the person attacked add ONE simple post: "I choose to ignore this. Please support me in ignoring it" End of thread. The sooner it goes to the bottom and disappears, the better.
The current method of turning a negative to a positive still (and this is my opinion, not gospel) gives the flamer an opportunity to see his "name in lights"; it still gives him credibility and a forum.
