Thinking about it, although I was too young to realise at the time, the old Nellie's was the perfect Old Git's pub. There was gas lighting and open fires, the decor hadn't been touched for at least 60 years (this was in the late 1960s), and you could sit in the snug, the kitchen or in the main 'men only' room. There was no actual bar - your beer was served to you at your table by Nellie or her sister, Dorothy, so there was no need to move except to go for a pee, which you did against the wall in the back yard.
