As a child I was bitten in the face by my neighbor's white German Shepard. That incident did not cause me to hate dogs.
As a teen I had a dachshund/shepard mix (yup, you read that correctly). I got home from school one day and my sister started screaming at me that MY dog had bitten HER son. My first question was "what did he do to MY dog?". Turns out, he'd been trying to pick her up by her tail and had hurt her. My nephew was at fault, not the dog. It's not like she could say "hey, dude, that hurts." He was taught to treat the dog with respect and it didn't happen again.

You are also more likely to be bitten by a small breed (poms, peekapoos, etc) then you are by a large dog, the large dog just does more damage and gets more headlines.
