Dog kills rare sheep on Holy Isle

A rare breed sheep has been killed on Holy Isle by a dog from a private boat.

Holy Isle is a spiritual retreat centre owned by the Budhhists of Samye Ling, Eskdalemuir, and dogs are expressly forbidden ashore on the island.

Local administrator Adam Rose said: 'Visitors from a private boat brought a dog onto the island, lost control of it and it chased one of the wild Soay sheep into the sea and drowned it.

'It was horrible. A lot of other sheep scattered and disappeared and the owners finally restrained the dog. It was an Old English sheepdog and just a puppy, but he was an urban dog and probably not used to sheep.

'I know that a farmer would simply have shot the dog.

'We very much welcome day visitors and had more than 1,000 on the island last year. But to help us protect our rare wildlife and to respect the Holy Isle as a spiritual retreat we ask visitors not to bring dogs ashore.'

Tom Sheldon runs the Holy Isle ferry from Lamlash pier. He said: 'I know the people in that boat. They are regulars and they can be quite arrogant. No-one would get on board my ferry with a dog. The animals over there are just not used to dogs.'

Adam added: 'The issue is basically with people who come to Holy Isle with private boats. Our retreat leader Lama Yeshe has done a lot to open up the island to the public. We meet every boat that comes to the jetty and welcome them to our spiritual retreat.

'I will be writing a letter to every yacht club and marina on the Clyde to inform them that dogs are not allowed ashore here.'

Last year two dogs were shot by a Northend farmer after worrying sheep in Sannox.

Two months ago the Banner reported on a case of six sheep being killed by a pet dog in a field at Springbank, Brodick.
